War in My Bones
The War In My Bones didn’t start as a book. It began as a Marie Kondo quest with boxes of my father’s Army records. I intended to clean, sort, and donate the records to a Texas military museum, but halfway through, I started to hear Pop’s never-spoken-of combat story. I researched everything I could about his battles, from the deadly, frozen riverbank in World War II Italy to the postwar West Texas dust bowl.
I couldn’t finish Pop’s story without starting mine. I fell down the family research rabbit hole, and coupled with my tumultuous past, my own story burst out of that rabbit hole – poof! There in the bright sun was my story, all muddy and full of sticker burrs.
